We walk amongst myths in both subtle and surreal ways.
CHARACTERS that echo some deep desire, some burden of truth, perform everyday for our attention. We would be remiss if we didn’t take stock of their effects on our collective reality.
Some provide inspiration for our own iterations of Self seeking validation within streams of data. Others are poignant petri dishes where our flaws can play themselves out in ideal simulations. We use characters to explore the stories we are afraid to claim for ourselves.
These characters exist on multiple levels. Within various mediums. They anchor our perceptions of Self in models of action and ethics which all stem from an imaginative realm. A visionary realm where the future is an interface using the past and present as modulation keys.
Rampant capitalism and commercial globalization would have you believe that these characters are our playthings. That it is our right, as the “creators” of art, of history, to warp their purity through endless interpretation. This can be seen in the feed of social media being relayed 24/7, in the endless loop of Intellectual Properties being stretched into franchise. This so-called right—which we justify through copyright, free speech, and the distance between—is a false claim that we’ve made in the face of our lack of innovative spirit, of revolutionary arcs within the psyche to take hold for the collective. Myth has become the medium of capitalist expansion for the machines that reign supreme on our attention. Disney, Marvel, DC, ESPN, Warner Bros., the list could become practically a lineage of the modern Western Mythology being the mere instruments of capital for these conglomerates.
The signal myth used to carry has been significantly diluted by this exploitation. It has also restricted accessibility within the creative minds of our next generation. We’re not tapping into the deeper emanations of wisdom that myth—our collective stories—used to convey. Instead, we feed our deep insecurity and dissatisfaction on the people, thus brands, brave enough to separate themselves from the masses. Our current myths have attached themselves to people who’ve already escaped the rat race but won’t teach the next generations to do the same because of an irrational fear of loss. We’ve been sold a myth of immortality through material means, and every path towards that elusive product is built within this context of limited resources. There isn’t room for the two of us. One’s gotta go, or else die. These stakes make the potential for greatness seem like a fate only meant for those who have the will to exploit, to dominate. This creates a predatory ecosystem that drains its inhabitants of cooperative energy, and everyone wants to become a predator.
THE PLAYING FIELD::
You see, we don’t have the same structures and barriers to entry as previous generations did, and that should be a signal amongst our young visionaries, especially in the face of our pressing threat of authoritarianism. However, we are placated by the ease with which we are fed our consistent drip of nostalgia. Nostalgia which solidifies these Western myths—superheroes, main characters, icons, and historical/cultural narratives, all creating a strange media-infused dogma which narrows the imagination we can inhabit within these growing mediums. Everything feels like it has to fit in a preset design, a pre-existing lineage, a prevailing convention that separates the possible from the viable. This quality is something that we can’t escape—they’ve made it abundantly clear that there is a history to preserve. Whether that history justifies exploitation and dominance, or cooperation and liberation, is dependent on where you’re looking, but it is clear what concepts the oppressors amplify through their narratives.
In order to move forward with :VISION:, we must realize the POWER that MYTHOS has on both the collective and individual psyche. We frame our general experience of time as narrative—whether on purpose or subconsciously—this perception is an element of our becoming, and our agency within this becoming is dependent on how we seize these narratives. MYTH-SUPREMACY is the practice I propose to you all, a method for reclaiming the narrative that you—the individual—identify with. The narrative[s] propagated, warped, and exploited by oppressive systems.
Now here comes the kicker. Our beliefs, shaped by the external myths programmed by environments and the internal compass which reflects how we process those stimuli, can very well be the barriers to us seizing the narrative of our generation. Our internal compasses are being toyed with by the algorithms, systems, and structures that seek to disorient us enough to be directed. We are shown symbols and characters in a trance-like cycle of simulated expectation and payoff with no sense of stakes for our own becoming. Every time I feel like a reel on Instagram is calling me to action, making me think, or at least challenging me, I’m already exposing myself to five more reels that derail that flow of ideas.
THE POWER WE HOLD::
We have an unprecedented POWER within Gen Z—this ability to realize ourselves in a surreal clarity via the consciousness web of the internet. I’ve seen it and am seeing it everyday with these floating heads materializing in the digital ether. I believe we have an opportunity to manifest a revolution of collectives creating new mythologies, new sources of vision for the next generations to not only escape to but use as devices for their becoming. We have to reprogram the narrative being sown right in front of us, for us. There is a seed of a brighter future, and in order to properly cultivate the imminent garden, we must take the reins on the characters and stories that will inspire us to use the right water, tend to the soil, and give the fruits to our children. I;d like to dub this power, which we ALL have, MYTH-SUPREMACY.
MYTH-SUPREMACY is an awareness of MYTHOS on both the micro- and macrocosms of Self manifesting in our interface with reality, and the key shift to embody your place within MYTHOS as you create your future. Stories are the key to unlocking new ideas and possibilities embedded and hidden in our potential for evolving dynamics with our reality. Allow dogma to harden the myths we tell ourselves, and we have no room to course-correct when we’re inevitably blindsided. Allow dissonant systems to exploit our myths, and the original vision becomes perverted from the spark that lit it to begin with, and new ideas are stunted by the convention created. We have to develop a re-energized agency with our individual practices of actualization, and apply those to the collective mission, and MYTH-SUPREMACY is the shift needed in order to achieve that.
IN PRACTICE:
To practice MYTH-SUPREMACY, one must ask themself: what were the myths that shaped my imagination as a youth? The next step: where do those myths interact with my sense of Self—whether that be in our memories, our relationships, our actions, or our dreams. The important thing to remember is that MYTHOS—narrative—exists on many levels of our experience. Greater than the media we consume, our language surrounding the life-experience—which is greatly affected by our early environments and the nature vs. nurture dynamics we straddle in these environments—can create powerful narratives in our belief systems and can become indistinguishable from our sense of Self. The first step in MYTH-SUPREMACY is to realize you can presently reverse engineer these narrative elements that comprise your current identity.
Now, this can be practiced through visualizing the past, journaling about memories both big and small, traumatic and otherwise, and really just collapsing the distance between you and the past as you experience it. Understanding that it does not define you but informs the reality you exist within. Further, depersonalizing your past to view its energetic nature as a system, a machine, an engine for the present Self, allows one to reverse engineer its elements and hold it in the proverbial hand. It becomes a device for establishing context instead of a mysterious weight in your heart and mind.
This is the first step in a continuous process. Find the MYTHOS born out of the complex system that is the past, and reverse engineer it to become a tool that you can exert mastery over, that you can practice in your active becoming. This is a higher function of agency, this is incorporating the past as a reflection-engine, where your perception of it isn’t mired in fear, pain, or loss—experiences that prime our survival instincts but in today’s society, don’t lead to anything good. It’s as simple as that.
There are more steps to this, but I really just wanted to introduce the problem I see—the fact that we’ve lost control of the MYTHOS informing our becoming as a collective. MYTH-SUPREMACY is not about dominance, superiority, or even excellence. It is first a realization of the power certain narratives have on you—as an individual within a larger whole—and then a reclaiming on how you perceive, project, and practice narrative as individuals becoming part of the whole, however that collective is formed for you, perceived by you.
As we are inundated with media in a system that exploits our attention and emotion, we now have an opportunity to recontextualize our place within the oppressor’s narrative. YOU have an opportunity to see the strategies used against you and turn them into seeds for your next evolution. Greater than any profit, any enterprise… This is about becoming. Or more deeply, the growth into fulfillment that echoes across medium, across conversation, across community, and connects to the Self as an idea that perceives itself. Because if you haven’t seen it already, they’re using our reflections against us. .
